Research Ethics Review Process

Research Ethics Proposal

This page provides background informaiton for the research ethics proposal. Any projects which involve human participants should submit a proposal and await approval before collecting any data.

Note: as Max continues to explore the idea of open source research, I hope to one day make this document a more external facing document

Review Process and Declaration

The application will be reviewed by the Goodbyte Research Ethics Board (GREB) comprised of the following members:

  1. A Goodbyte member1.
  1. An unaffiliated research expert2.
  1. An unaffiliated community member.

This board will be assembled ad hoc upon proposal submissions. Applicants will be notified via the provided email of the decision which may be any of the following:

  • Accepted without edits
  • Accepted with minor revisions (not requiring verification by GREB)
  • Requiring major revisions (with verification of one original member of GREB)
  • Rejected

Recommended length is one page, however longer submissions will be accepted should the project require it.

In submitting the application, you attest that you will not begin collecting any data until receiving approval from GREB. You also agree to abide by the decision made by the GREB and recognize that a rejected project is not barred from future submission of a reconsidered and revised application.

Eligibility Criteria

This research application is designed solely for use when the proposed project meets the following criteria. If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to discuss a higher risk research project, you can contact the Research Ethics Group at ethics@goodbyte.com.

  • Participants are legally capable of consenting on their own behalf, and are free from coercion or undue influence;
  • Any accidental or intentional disclosure of the participants’ responses would not reasonably place participants at risk of criminal or civil liability, harmful retaliation, or be damaging to the participants’ emotional or financial well-being, employability, or reputation;
  • The study does not involve recruitment by a third party aside from a paid research service such as Qualtrics or Survey Monkey;
  • The study does not involve deception or provide incomplete information to participants; and
  • The study methodology does not primarily target vulnerable populations (i.e children, people with disabilities, etc)3.

Footnotes

  1. Goodbyte member will be a volunteer who will be available at time of submission. Ideally, the Goodbyte member would not be involved in the research project.

  2. Research expert can be anyone who has knowledge of and experience with research methodologies.

  3. Vulnterable population should not be excluded from participating in usability studies. However, projects which exclusively or specifically study vulnerable populations require greater care and consideration than generalized usability studies.
